This week, in a delightful departure from precedent, our principal post is by our resident historian, Tom Mitchell, who brings to bear on our ongoing conversation his extensive knowledge of the history of peace-making in Northern Ireland. For a time, a while back, comparisons between Israel and Belfast were fairly common. Then, as the situation in the Middle East became more and more intractable, attention shifted from the Irish example to the Algerian example. Whichever the more relevant, surely we are entitled to search the Irish example for such wisdom as it may offer those of us principally concerned with the Israel/Palestine conflict. Tom does exactly that in what follows.
