This is indeed a new day. Or shall we say, perhaps more accurately: a new night? The unexpected outright victory of Hamas creates a situation anticipated only in our nightmares.
John F. Kennedy, after America’s defeat at the Bay of Pigs, famously said, “Victory has a thousand fathers; defeat is an orphan.” But this defeat, the defeat of Fatah by Hamas, is hardly an orphan. The progenitors of this democratically elected bastard Hamas government include Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestine Authority, a confirmed moderate with almost no conception of how to be a president, and Ariel Sharon, who did everything possible to ensure that Israel would, as he so often asserted it did, have no partner for peace.
