Beyond sympathy, the overwhelming Israeli reaction to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath has been shock. How can the world’s superpower, home of smart bombs and master of seemingly infinite resources, have messed up so badly in just about every respect? Why had it not prepared for the possibility of the levees breaking? Why did it not have an adequate evacuation plan? Why were the National Guard and the buses so long delayed, the food and the water as well? And how can it have been that so many of the residents of New Orleans had been invisible, hence forgotten, until Katrina?
