It isn’t often that George W. Bush and The New York Times are in agreement, but this week we’ve witnessed an outpouring of praise for Prime Minister Sharon from both the president of record and the newspaper of record as well as from just about everyone (so to speak) else. And truth to tell, there is much in Sharon’s behavior these past months that warrants respect, even admiration.
That said, it is well to remember that our tradition teaches “kabdeihu v’chashdehu” – “respect him, but suspect him.” (An earlier version of Ronald Reagan’s “trust but verify.”) And, respect having been so widely expressed, it is time to move on.
